Dryer Skin

Skin, hair and Nail Health

Although aging impacts the whole body, the most visible effects occur in our skin, hair and nails.

The Appearance of our skin, hair and nails depend on a framework of structural proteins, especially keratin, collagen and elastin. Collagen and hyaluronic acid are natural skin components that maintain moisture, support elasticity and promote smoothness.

Aging along with sun exposure, reduces the skin’s content of collagen and hyaluronic acid. Dryness and wrinkles can be because of loss of these components that weakens skin structure.

Clinical trials show that oral use of the collagen peptide improves skin elasticity by and average of 7% and reduces the depth of eye wrinkles by 20%. By the age 21 we start losing about 1% of the collagen in our skin every year.

Collagen is an important component of youthful skin. It makes up 70% of the weight of the dermis, the inner layer of the skin. It also supports levels of elastin, the protein that allows skin to stretch and return to its original shape, which makes collagen a critical element in maintaining supple, flexible skin. As we get older the number of collagen fibres decrease and this leads to wrinkled and sagging skin.

Factors that compromise skin, Hair and Nail Health

  • Biological aging which affect collagen, elastin, keratin, melanin and levels of hormones to drive changes in skin, hair and nail quality.
  • Elevated blood sugar and inflammation, which damage collagen and interfere with its production.
  • Ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which causes free radical damage and increases the activity of enzymes that break down collagen and elastin.
  • Smoking and air pollution, both with damage skin.
